Globalization is the increasing interconnectedness of people and places through converging processes of economic, political, and cultural change. Those who are pro-globalization believe that wealth will “trickle down” from rich countries to poor countries. They also believe it will spread the benefits of new ideas and new technology to all nations. One organization that loans money to nations so they can invest in business is the World Bank.On the other hand, those who are anti-globalization say it is not fair, because the richest 20% of the world’s people consume 86% of the world’s resources, resulting in the inequalities between “haves” and “have nots.”
Use the CIA Fact book to answer the following questions: In Afghanistan the life expectancy is 44.64 years , the infant mortality rate is 151.95 deaths per 1000 live births, the literacy rate is 28.1 %, and the TFR is 6.53 . In Australia the life expectancy is 81.63 , the infant mortality rate is 4.75 deaths per 1000 live births, the literacy rate is 99%, and the TFR is 1.78 .
We often categorize nations as being “developed” or “developing” nations. Vietnam and Mexico would be considered developing nations; Japan and Canada are developed nations.
The current world population is over 6,787,265,430, still increasing billion people. The number that measures how many children the average woman in a nation will bear is known as the total fertility rate , which is abbreviated as TFR . When this number is exactly 2.1 , then the population stays the same; if it’s higher, the population goes up, and if it’s lower, the population decreases. The population is growing fastest in developed nations.
A population pyramid that is shaped just like a pyramid -- wide on the bottom and narrow at the top -- shows a country whose population is increasing. If it is shaped more like a vase or a soda bottle, that nation’s population is decreasing. Young people are found at the bottom of the pyramid, and Men are found on the left hand side.
When discussing migration, people who are entering a country are known as immigrants, and people who are leaving a country are known as emigrants.
People leave their country for many reasons. An example of a push force is unemployment, and an example of a pull force is better economic opportunity . If a nation’s net migration rate is a negative number, it means more people are leaving the country than are arriving.
STEP THREE: In a short, well-written essay, answer ONE of the following questions:
1) Some people feel very strongly in their pro-globalization opinions, while some anti-globalization advocates have different beliefs. It’s likely that the truth lies somewhere in between. What do you think is the “middle ground” in this argument? Be sure to provide evidence for your opinion.
OR 2) Explain the academic discipline of Human Geography using the five themes. How is this discipline different from the study of physical geography? In your opinion, what is the benefit of studying Human Geography?
OR 3) The demographic transition graph describes the changes in birthrates and death rates that a country experiences over time. Describe the changes that the United States has gone through by using the demographic transition diagram.
STEP FOUR: First, go to the following website and read the news story you will find there:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/24/world/americas/24mexico.html
Then, in a short yet brilliant essay, summarize that story by relating it to our studies of immigration in class. Try to use terms from the text and from our class discussions.

• This is a very interesting argument between both sides. Pro- globalization thinks that it will help with better technology, new ideas, and more money. They also think that the money will trickle down to the poor, so the poor will actually get money. Also, that the poor countries will catch up to the rich ones. On the other hand people against globalization think that it will only benefit the rich ones and that they consume all the resources and money. I think they middle would be that they have globalization and the poor countries get more money than the rich ones. The rich ones already have money so to make everyone happy the poor countries would get the money. Also, the rich countries can have the ideas and some profits, but they do not need anymore because they are rich. Since globalization is everywhere than everyone should at least get some profit from it. The rich ones will take it for granted to their ability and the poor countries will use it for their best. The world is everyone’s, so everyone should have part of the resources and profits of technology and globalization.
The News Article Essay
• This story is about how a high percentage of Mexicans want to come and live in the US. The Mexicans that are leaving their home country and moving to the US are called emigrants. Mexicans entering the US are called immigrants. They are leaving because of push and pull factors. Push factors are factors that make someone want to leave their country. Pull factors are factors that bring someone into living in their country. Mexicans want to leave their country because of their push factors. Mexico does not have the better health program, job opportunity or freedom. The pull factors for going into the US are that they have all the things that the Mexicans want to have. Many Mexicans want to come to the US so badly that they come over illegally. More than half of the percentages from the survey say that they have come over illegally. There is also a higher percentage that more people are happy to be here than are unhappy being in the US.

ReplyDeleteEssays: In your first essay, try to explain just how globalization operates - then I can understand your analysis as to why it works or doesn't work. Essay #2: much better. You used statistics as evidence, and you defined the terms we have been using in class. Nice work.
