Developed or Not Developed
United States: I would consider the United States a developed country. I think this because there is a high population, and low death rate. The US has money, a good government, ok economy, and natural resources. This country has lots of money to do many things.
Nigeria: I would consider a developing country. This country is very poor and needs a lot of help. They have a high death rate and they have many young people. I feel with all the young people they have, they could become a better country with new and intelligent minds of all the young people. Although they have a high infant mortality rate of 94 and they have a low life expectancy.
Ethiopia: Ethiopia is a developing country because they are not that rich and have many bad things in statistics. They have a life infant mortality rate and low life expectancy. A deveolped country does not have these types of problems. Also, they have thousands of young people, but barely any old people.
Sudan: This country is definitely a developing country. Sudan has so many problems and there is war. They do not have barely and money, food, shelter, water, or basic necessities. Developed countries have all the things that they do not have. They do not have any time of health care, or any good things to help the people live. Sudan needs a lot of work and help to maybe become a developed country. All the countries in Africa all have the same problem. They all have young people and very little old people, no money or health care. Also, they have no food or water, they are all poor.
○ Kenya: Kenya is also a developing country. It is poor, has very little health care, and barely any education. Kenya also has war and bad things happening in their country. All these things will not help the developing of their country. They need all the things that the rich countries have.
○ South Africa: South America, I think is a developed country. This country has many people and could develop more into a better country. I feel like this country is both a devolving and developed country. It can go either way. They still have things to be improved, but I feel like they are on their way to a good path.

Presentations

Today in class we went to the brown room and watched presentations. It seemed like they were all from Indian culture. Many of the things had bead and deer hide. The people of the culture seemed like they used every last bit of everything they got. They never wasted everything and always found a way to use the different parts. Many of the things had deer hide, beads, and wool. Each product had something different about it. They all were used for something different. There was a lot of interesting things and products. This culture used lots of crops and animals to help them live. I learned alot.

12-16-09

Today in class we handed in our paper's and learned about the new project we are going to do. Eww! The new project seems easy and a good way to get 50 points. I think that Ally and I did a really good job on our paper. I think that we will get a good grade. Also, we have a whole funny conversation about Lauren Hiem and Mitchell. It was so funny I could not stop laughing. Another fun and interesting class.

12-15-09

In human geo class we took a test on the Sudan movie. I thought that the test was hard. I do not think that I did a good job. After the test we worked on our paper. I think that we did a really good job and that we deserve a good grade. Hopefully we got a good grade and I did a good job on the test. I am glad that the paper is over with!

12-11-09

Today we finished watching the movie. I absolutely loved that movie. That is the type of movie that makes you want to go help as many people that you can. It inspired me to help others and be more appreciative of what I have. After the movie we talked about it for a little bit, then we started to work on the paper again. I joined the group on Facebook for John Bul. I am definitely going to get this movie and show it to my family. I had fun watching and laughing during the movie.

.1. What Academy Award winning actress narrates the documentary?

§ Nicole Kidman

2. In what countries does the film take place?

○ Sudan
○ Ethiopia
○ South Africa
○ Kenya

3. List the main characters of the film.

§ Panther boid
□ Father was a farmer and cattle keeper
§ John Bul
§ Daniel Abul Patch

4. Define refugee.
Someone who flees their country because of civil war and extremely bad conditions like war

5. Define IDP.
International displaced Persons

6. The film centers around a group of boys. What are they called? § They are called the Lost Boys

7. Track the movement of the boys after they leave their homes in their original country (the answer to number 2).
They leave their country to go to Sudan, then there is war and the Muslims want to kill all the boys and sterilize them. Next, they go to Ethiopia. The boys stay there for a while then they have to move to Kenya.

8. What are some major differences between the lives of the boys and your own life, specifically when they are living in the refugee camps?

They do not have any necessities that will help them live like we do. They do not have a good education, showers, food, water, shelter, and electricity. We have all things that they have never even heard of. They are also confined in the camp grounds and they do not have the freedom we do. In the movie they said that they do not even have parents because they do not know if they died or not. We also have money and jobs, that they do not have besides farming. They appreciate things a lot more than we do, because they have nothing.

9. What are some of the difficulties that they boys must deal with when they arrive in the United States? How are their lives different in the United States in comparison to their home countries?

The boys have to be able to adjust to their new life. That is the biggest challenge for them, I think. Also, they need to find a job and start providing for themselves. The boys need to figure out how to manage money and figure out the everything in the US works. All the things in the US, such as a household and jobs, are very different to what they are used to in Sudan. Also, in Sudan all the things that they need they either have to search for or make, in the US it is already made. The US has a lot more money and technology then Sudan. Basically Sudan is way behind in technology and are still behind from the rest of the World. In Sudan there are no jobs and people giving them money, here you get paid and have a good job. It seems like the US and Sudan are like classes. US is higher class and Sudan is lower class, based on what they have.

10. Answer the following question only after you conclude the viewing of the film:

The title of the film, "God Grew Tired of Us", seems to be somewhat ironic after hearing the account of the boys first hand. Explain why the title is ironic using specific examples from the film. Do the boys really believe that God had abandoned them? Or is their faith stronger than ever? Why? Give examples

I think that it is actually ironic how the title does really fit the movie. During the boys trip to Kenya, they thought since all the boys were dying, they believed that God didn't care for them anymore. They thought that God did not want to watch over or take care of them anymore. They thought God would help them all survive, and when they lost thousands of boys, they thought God gave up. I think that the boys believe in God the whole time, but they were so delusional from do food or water, that they thought he gave up on them. The boys wanted all the lost boys to survive, and when they didn't they all thought that God abandoned them. Also, they thought this because they had to leave their families behind and not know if they would ever see them again. I think once they got in the US, their faith grew a lot stronger. Especially John because he got a job, went to school, founded a organization, helped the people back in his country, and found his mother. That all would not have happened if he did not have courage and if God was on his side. Once Panther came to the US he got a job, went back to school, helped people on his country and married his wife. They all had a piece of God with them throughout their whole life. They would not be alive if God was not with them.Pasted from

Bagel Day

Today in class we had bagels. They were so good, mine was cinnamon. Besisdes the bagels and cookie we continued to watch the moive. We are close to the end and I feel like I have learned aa lot about Sudan and what it is like to live there. During the movie we got to see how they boys were doing after living in the US for 1 year. It seems like they were doing great. All of them are going to school and have good jobs. Panther is even working in a nice resturant. When you look back to the beginnig of the movie, you can see how much they have come. I feel so excited for them and that they now have independence. All of them wanted to help their country and you can see at the end of the movie that they are on thier way to doing that. Finally, John got to reunite with his mother. It must feel so good to finally see your mother after several years. You can also see how he had made a big impact on showing people how bad it is in Sudan. He wants to show poeple that there is war in Sudan and all his fellow friends are in a bad place. I feel like the movie has shown me that I should be alot more appriciated of what I have. I hope they can all help the people back in thier country.

Today's Class 12-9-09

In class today we continued to watch the movie. So far I really like the movie. I feel very sad for all the boys and what they had to go through. I feel happy that they are here in America to have a better oppurtunity. Its hard to believe that they do not know how to use basic essentials in a house. It seems funny when I see them eating butter and thinking everyting in the kitchen is green. I seems funny seeing them not know anything about things that we use on a daily basis. I cannnot image what they went through, and not that they are here, it is a big change for them. Watching the movie makes me want to go and help them and teach them things to make life easier for them. I feel bad for the boys because they do not know anything about the US and it is very hard to adjust to the new setting. I am excited to see the rest of the movie.

Africa Test

On Friday we took a 10 question quiz on Africa. I was kind of worried that I would do bad, because we did not talk about Africa at all before the quiz. Then, when we reviewed I felt a little bit better. The night before I went through the pages we were supposed to read and make notes. I studied my notes and felt like I had a good chance. When we took the quiz I realized that pretty much all the questions I took notes on. I was glad I took notes and thought of a good way to study. I took the quiz and when we went over it I only got one wrong. I was proud of myself that a got a good grade not knowing a lot about Africa.

Africa

Today in class we colored a map of Africa. We had to color the different countries and label them. In the map we also had to label the rivers, land areas, etc. I had fun coloring all the different countries wit different colors. I am excited to learn about Africa, because I feel like it is a really interesting to learn about. Also, last year I had to do a project on a country in Africa. I picked the country Ghana. I got a good grade and learned alot. Unfortunately, I do not remember a lot about the information or the actual information. I am excited to learn about Africa's culture, language, and history. Hopefully, I will do good on the quiz.

12-2-09

Again in class today we still worked on our paper. We got a little bit more done. Ally started to write the introductory paragraph. I am excited to get the paper over with and get a good grade. I tried to finish taking notes, but I could not find any good websites for information. I think that we have good topics for the paper, but we hate doing the research and writing papers. Other than writing the first paragraph and finding research, I wanted to fall asleep. I was so tired. Ally and I are ready to have this paper over with.

A Good Class

Today in class Ally and I worked on our research paper. We picked the 2016 Olympics to do our paper on. We made our outline and figured out what we were going to talk about and put in the paper. We decided to do a little background information. Also, we decided we were going to put what sports were in the Olympics, why Rio De Janerio was picked to hold the Olympics, what are the Olympics, and our opinion about the Olympics. We have many things that we want to put in the paper. In class we got a lot of good information. Since we have good subjects, we have good quality of information. today we got information on the tradition and history, and all the different sports. I think that we will finish with a good paper.

Latin American Feast

The other day we had our thanksgiving feast of Latin American food in Human Geo class. There was a lot of food and some of it was good , and some of it was bad. haha. It was interesting to see all the different types of foods. It was weird to see people in Latin American countries actually eat this. I made this huge thing of my chicken enchilada dish, and I did not think a lot of people were going to eat it. When I got back at the end of the day all of it was almost gone! I was so surprised, I knew my dish was good, but I didn't expect all of it to be gone. Other than that hopefully I got a good grade. That was a fun day for human geography.

Today's Class 11-18-09

Today in class we just talked. We talked about our next research paper. Ewww! I am glad we get to do it with a partner because it will go alot faster and the paper would be better with two brains than one. I am also excited for the Latin America cook out....if you could call it that. I love to cook Italian food, so I wonder what my food from another country will taste. Haha. Human Geo is so much fun and its hilarious. Besides talking about assignments and food we talked about a extra credit assignment. I am glad you are giving us the opportunity to do this, cause I need to do it.

Today's Class 11-17-09

Today in class we took a test. I thought that I did pretty good on it. Knowing Mr. Schick's tests, I thought it was going to be a little harder. I am glad that it was easy. Hopefully I got a good grade so I can keep that 100%. The test was on North America, and I took lots of good notes. I studied my notes and his PowerPoint. That seemed to help when I was taking the test. After class we had a assembly. I almost made honor roll. I had one 76%, not in Human Geo though. haha

North America Essay

North America is a country that contains fifty states. All the states have their own different products, points of view, and development of their state. These different things come together to make one huge economy and social development. Economy and social development is the way a state or country is building its way of life. The economy is the source of all the money and financial means. It also takes care of all the different exports and imports. The government and the President run the economy to make sure it is best suitable for the people and the country. Another thing that the economy does is keeping track of all the money that the country gains, loses, and gives to the people. People make the economy. They are the ones that make the money, jobs, and sell things so the economy gets better. Many people make their money. Economy applies to the US in a big way. Without the economy, everyone would be poor, and have not jobs. “Also, 335 million people consume huge quantities of global resources but also produce some of the world’s most sought-after manufactured goods and services.” This statement leads me to talk about how your social development has grown a lot throughout the years. Social development is when the people and technology develop to a higher level, and produce changes in the aspects of the people. North America’s technology has grown through the roof since the last 20 years. There has been extreme improvement in our technology. The technology also brings in profits for the people and economy. We have developed computers, cell phones, better agriculture, transportation, etc. Without the social development of the people there would be nothing. The people are the ones that make up everything; they are the people that run the program. Social development can also be associated with the actual people. Social development is the interaction between the people and how they react to others and their community. If this increases than there is going to be more social development throughout the people. Immigrants will come and bring their resources with them and help their new home. Also, the economy can lead to social ups and downs. The ups are that the economy can make people rich or poor. Rich people benefit from the economy more than the poor do. Either way economic and social development takes part in the building of North America.

Global Warming Day

Today in class we watched the presentation of the other groups on their opinion on global warming. Some of the groups believed it was a problem, and other groups believed it wasn't a problem. I personally believe that it is a problem, and soon it will really catch up to the resat of the world. Hopefully, we can try and help prevent a small amount of the damage being done. The groups mainly talked about how it effects earth, people, and animals. I think that it effects each element at the same amount. The polar bears do no have the ice bearings anymore, because they are all melting. The earth for humans is becoming unhealthy. It s becoming unhealthy because the air is getting polluted from all the gases in the atmosphere. Humans are making global warming a bigger problem by littering and using so much gas for cars, planes, etc. In the days that we are living now we would need to energy cars to try and help stop global warming. That invention would probably be hard, but it is not impossible. I think that the century we are living in now will only make it worse. With all the new technology, food productions, etc, is destined to make global warming harder to cure.

Powerpoint of Global Warming.

Today in class we got into groups to discuss our opinion on global warming. My opinion is that global warming is a problem. I believe that it is hurting out earth and we need to take control. Global warming can effect the earth itself, and the people who live on it. For our assignment we have to discuss of opinions, whether for or against and state some arguments. We have to support our opinions with facts, statistics, and arguments. I think this project will be interesting to see what everyone else feels and thinks. I am excited to see how every one's presentations will turn out and what they think about the issue.

Today's Class 10-27-09

Today in class we basically reviewed. We went over the gloablization test and filled in all the answeres. It was so funny because it was the first class and no one was answering anything except Bryant. Everyone must have been so tired, like I was. Hopefully I will get a good grade on the exam because we were talking about it today. Other than reviewing we did nothing. We talked about related subjects.

Global Warming

The causes of global warming can come from many things. The causes can either come from earth itself of from people on earth. For each cause there are causes inside of each one. The earth is causing problems for itself. This happens when gases are released into the atmosphere. When gas goes into the atmosphere, it destroys the layer that protects the earth, making global warming on earth.the gas that is going into the atmosphere is called the greenhouse gas. Besides the earth creating its own problems, the people on the earth can make global warming too. People cause global warming because of the new way of life, there is more transportation, food, and new technology. All these things uses resources. Where do you think all these things come from? From all the cars traveling the is thousands of gas going into the air and hurting the environment. Also, new technology takes down all the natural resources like trees, etc. The food, also takes away from the natural supply of food. A result of the food industry can be littering. Littering makes trash and that trash goes into the ground and makes bad soil. With bad soil you cannot grow anything, and the environment and atmosphere gets worse. Lastly, burning things releases gases that are bad for the atmosphere too.

http://library.thinkquest.org/J003411/causes.htm

Global Warming effects the whole earth and the lives of the people on earth. A main effect of global warming is the climate change. The climate will change and can produce storms, hurricanes, etc. This can also effect the oceans, glaciers, and sea level rise. Global Warming effects an equal amount of the environment. When the gases are in the atmosphere it effects the air that the people are breathing in. Breathing in unhealthy air can give people health problems. Also, when it effects nature, it can effect the animals, and resources.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_global_warming

There are many controversies over global warming. Many people feel like it is ruining the world and the things around it. People try to do things that help the environment and the atmosphere, while others do not. Without the ozone layer and atmosphere we cannot live a healthy life. Global Warming is a big part of letting us live healthy lives. Many people do not realize the impact on what their actions are doing to the earth they are living on. While others do care and want to make a difference. There are arguments on global warming, saying that it is not important and it will not effect them. Others believe that it is important and it will affect them ina big way.

Today's Class 10-22-09

In class today we watched the powerpoints of the other groups about the climate. SOme powerpoints were good and some were bad. Haha. It was a very boring class.

Solar Energy
○ It uses natural resources to help the environment.
○ There is radiation that is trapped by the clouds which makes life possible on earth.
○ Without solar energy we do not have the sun to make crops and food.
○ Clouds and wind can prevent the suns energy from reaching the earth.

Latitude
○ This goes from north to south.
○ Where you are determines what your climate is going to be

Interaction btwn Land and Water
○ The oceans give the climate

Global Pressure Patterns
○ The earth is overly heated
○ Enlarged cells produce rainless summers
§ Oceanic cells
○ Depended in the pressure give you what temperature you are going to get.

Today's Class

Today in class, we did out group projects. My group goe the interaction between water and land. We did that in class. Besides that we took notes on Global Controls. Its interesting how the climate can determine many different things in society. We also read a little bit, took notes and then did our projects. That's pretty much all we did.

• The world needs food.
• Climate determines what food is grown in a particular area
• Culture, economy, and technology makes the people adapt to the weather and climate
• Socioeconomic- means economy for the social aspect.
• Repercussions- the effects of a decision or consequences.
• Climate links us in our globalized economy.
• Meteorological processes are complicated.

Climate Controls
○ Five main factors influence climate
§ Solar energy
§ Latitude
§ Interaction btwn land and water
§ World pressure systems
§ Global wind patterns

Finishing the Video

We finished the video today and it was a real shocker. I could not believe the things I heard and saw. Thousands of lives were taken and thousands were left homeless. It was very sad how all those people had to go through a horrible experience like that. This makes me really think if that happened to me, I would be left with nothing, and I would be devastated. I cannot even image what the whole city went through on that day. It breaks my heart to see all those people left with nothing and to know that they cannot go back to their beloved home that they once had. It was also interesting because the levies that the government tried to use to protect the city did not even work. There was more interesting things like why didn't the government warn the citizens that a huge storm was coming. I am asking myself that why would those people want to stay in a place where a huge storm is coming and there is a chance they can die. Many things crossed my mind when I was watching the video. It must have taken so much money to try and fix the hurricane damage. There is still damage that is still in New Orleans. New Orleans still has a lot of work to do in rebuilding their city; if they even rebuild it. There are pros and cons to this situation. Hopefully the government and people can make a good decision on the future of New Orleans.

Global Warming

http://www.edf.org/page.cfm?tagID=35215&source=ggadgw35215&gclid=CLfzopPsx50CFU1M5QodyEsZyw

•"In a joint statement with 10 other National Academies of Science, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences said: "The scientific understanding of climate change is now sufficiently clear to justify nations taking prompt action. It is vital that all nations identify cost-effective steps that they can take now, to contribute to substantial and long-term reduction in net global greenhouse gas emissions."—Joint Statement of Science Academies: Global Response to Climate Change, 2005 "
•"The American Geophysical Union, a respected organization comprising over 41,000 Earth and space scientists, wrote in its position on climate change that "natural influences cannot explain the rapid increase in global near-surface temperatures observed during the second half of the 20th century."

These statements show that the greenhouse effect can have different effects on the world. Also, that the two different organizations have 2 different opinions. They say that the climate can give an effect on the global temps. This issue has a different impact on different people's opinion and or organizations.

Hurricane Katrina Notes

• Katrina was going to be a killer storm
• Many people haven't eaten, slept, or have had a shower
• 120 mile per hour winds
• There was half a million homeless
• Begins as a tropical depression
• Heat and energy from the warm water gets released into the air, making severe winds
• 61,ooo dead people- hurricane Ivan
• The weather consistently shifts
• They have categories of dangerous storms, 1 to 5
• Monday, August 29,2005, is when the hurricane Katrina occurs
• what was going through the citizen's minds when they saw huge waves and tons of water coming fast at them?
• What was their first reaction?
• Who was the first person to come to your mind when you knew the hurricane was occurring.
• Most of the deaths were drowning.
• they now have levies and solid concrete walls that block floods
• Since the animals could not do anything, did they all die?
• Many people evacuated and many people didn't
• Other people didn't have the resources or means to leave.
• The walls of the houses would shake and make loud noises
• How come the poorer people are the ones that do not get any help

Clash Day 10-15-09

Today was clash day for spirit week. It is really funny seeing all the different people get wacked out with their clothes. Its very interesting and funny. Anyway today in Human Geo all we did is catch up on work. Since I didn't have anything to catch up on, haha, I got to do anything. It was ok, but it was boring. Hopefully we can do something more fun next class, like we always do.

10- 13-09

Today in class we took a test. I thought the test was pretty easy, hopefully I got a good grade. Mr. Schick kept telling me that i was going to get a 100, so hopefully that will happen. Other than that we waited half the time and talked. A couple people fell asleep, it was really funny. Another funny and sometimes boring Human geo class. Haha.

Today 10-12-09

Absent

Friday's Class

In class Friday we watched to presentations of the different countries. It was interesting to see all the different aspects from the groups topics. There was some new information that I didn't know, and their was some information that my group researched. I was surprised at how much corn and rice were used around the World. I knew that China's main source of food was rice. Many poor countries have rice, because that's all they can get and afford. Crops just didn't play a role in people's lives, but so did animals. Goats and cows are a big part of some countries lifestyle. They can plow, give meat, milk, and fur to the people. Many different elements play roles in countries. I thought that my group did a good job on our project and presentation.

Today 10-8-09

Today's class was a blur. The whole class we were finishing our project. We were supposed to be finishing the first twenty minutes, but of course that didn't happen. It was so funny how a couple groups had searched the same thing and let out a part, that happened to our group. I also thought that the project was a blur too. It went by so fast, so did this short week. Hopefully we can finish the projects tottally and do something that is more slow and interesting. Today's class felt like it was 10 minutes long! All we did ws finish our projects. How Sad!!!

New Guinea End of Video

Today in class we finished watching the video on New Guinea. The end of it was very interesting. We learned that the have many resources to use, but at some point they are not useful. Also, that the climate got really dry and they had to more from place to place and the plants will die. Because of this they had to use animals to help them with their work. People had to domesticate the animals so they would know what to do during the farming. They said that there is over 2 million different animals and only 14 of them can be domesticated. This means that the animals are trained to do specific work. New Guineans use elephants, goats, sheep, pigs, llamas, cows, cattle, and other useful animals. We also saw that in Papaya New Guinea there are other people that don't just farm and make things everyday, there are cars, airports, etc. Just because they farm all day and crop that doesn't mean that they are totally different from the outside world. Many people are hunters and gatherers. From the CIA Factbook, it shows that they have a bad health care system because many people have AIDS or HIV. Also, there is a higher literacy rate for men than women. I think this is interesting because usually men are the ones that like to let the women do everything. I think this is happening because men have to provide for the family with food and supplies, in order to do that they need to be able to talk to others, communicate, and be able to actually know what they have to get and find. In New Guinea there life depends on nature and its resources. They get all their food from plants and crops, so they use seeds, animals, and dirt to make their houses. New Guineans have a tough life, but I bet you that they would not change it for the World.

The New Guinea Video Reflection

When I watched to video, I had many question going through my mind. In one part, the kids had clothes and in the other they didn't. I wondered if they had anything else to do besides hunting. They hunted alot because that was one of their many sources of food, besides the food from the tree. I also thought if if was healthy eating from a tree. I asked myself why are they so poor, and we are so jealous that we cannot help the poor countries that really need it. Many things went through my mind of how they can provide for themselves with using nature as their main source. I asked myself if they ever thought about the US, or if they even wanted to move to the US. I feel so bad for people in the poor countries because they have no resources, money, or technology. Its weird knowing that if the poor people switched lives with us they would not know how to live and vice versa. Its pretty sad how some people do not know how do do simple things using sticks and things, and people in New Guinea, that all they do on a daily basis.

New Guinea Notes

• They lived in groups and loved place where they could feed themselves
Nomads- hunter gatherers
• Wild sego- is an important food there
• Women do the gathering
• There was a drought for more than 1,000 years
• They found a village underground and they believe it was their for half 11,000 yrs
• granary was built to hold grain like wheat and barley
• They were the first farmers in the world.
• Plant domestication means to change crops.
• When they stored grain, it made it stay fresh and not get bad.
• Poor people are mostly fat because of what they eat, they eat carbs, and unhealthy food.
• Farming and the type of farming was important to their lives

New Guinea

Today's class we watched a video about New Guinea. It was very interesting how they live their lives compared to ours. The things that are hard for them to do or have are simple tasks for us. Its amazing how money and technology can chance everything. In the video I saw how they made their houses out of bamboo and sticks, and we have million dollar houses. I feel so bad for the poor people in the world because they want the small resources that we have, that seem so dumb for people like us. They have to make things they need and we can just buy it in a store. It also makes me sad that we buy things that they make when they do not even get money for it. They make it for us and they get poorer and we get richer. I wonder about their education. They would do anything to go to a school like John Carroll, which costs thousands of money. Some kids there probably do not even have an education. I find it real interesting to learn about countries that you rarely here about. I learned alot from the video. I learned that there was inequality among the people, the power was determined by race, and they are very poor, they are isolated, etc. I hope we can match more video's.

My Troubles While Trying To Take A Test

Today's class was very nerve recking and depressing. While I was trying to take a test, my internet was not working, I could not get to the article for the newsletter, could not get to email, and then i was starting to get a headache. I was very nervous that I was not going to be able to finish in time, which i didn't. Believe it or not, it is very hard to take a test when all your resources are crumbling before you. It was very hard trying to focus and getting the right answers while trying to figure out how to fix my computer. I was very stressed out about it and to top it off, it was the first class of the day. The rest of the day was misrable. So, for future reference to others try not to panic when taking a test that will not cooperate with you. Besisdes that I thought that they test was really easy and I thought that I will get a good grade on the test.

Globalization Test

“On my honor, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this graded academic work. I am a person of integrity and I do not cheat.” Agree to this statement by typing your name here: Jenna Fiamingo

Globalization is the increasing interconnectedness of people and places through converging processes of economic, political, and cultural change. Those who are pro-globalization believe that wealth will “trickle down” from rich countries to poor countries. They also believe it will spread the benefits of new ideas and new technology to all nations. One organization that loans money to nations so they can invest in business is the World Bank.On the other hand, those who are anti-globalization say it is not fair, because the richest 20% of the world’s people consume 86% of the world’s resources, resulting in the inequalities between “haves” and “have nots.”

Use the CIA Fact book to answer the following questions: In Afghanistan the life expectancy is 44.64 years , the infant mortality rate is 151.95 deaths per 1000 live births, the literacy rate is 28.1 %, and the TFR is 6.53 . In Australia the life expectancy is 81.63 , the infant mortality rate is 4.75 deaths per 1000 live births, the literacy rate is 99%, and the TFR is 1.78 .

We often categorize nations as being “developed” or “developing” nations. Vietnam and Mexico would be considered developing nations; Japan and Canada are developed nations.

The current world population is over 6,787,265,430, still increasing billion people. The number that measures how many children the average woman in a nation will bear is known as the total fertility rate , which is abbreviated as TFR . When this number is exactly 2.1 , then the population stays the same; if it’s higher, the population goes up, and if it’s lower, the population decreases. The population is growing fastest in developed nations.

A population pyramid that is shaped just like a pyramid -- wide on the bottom and narrow at the top -- shows a country whose population is increasing. If it is shaped more like a vase or a soda bottle, that nation’s population is decreasing. Young people are found at the bottom of the pyramid, and Men are found on the left hand side.

When discussing migration, people who are entering a country are known as immigrants, and people who are leaving a country are known as emigrants.

People leave their country for many reasons. An example of a push force is unemployment, and an example of a pull force is better economic opportunity . If a nation’s net migration rate is a negative number, it means more people are leaving the country than are arriving.

STEP THREE: In a short, well-written essay, answer ONE of the following questions:

1) Some people feel very strongly in their pro-globalization opinions, while some anti-globalization advocates have different beliefs. It’s likely that the truth lies somewhere in between. What do you think is the “middle ground” in this argument? Be sure to provide evidence for your opinion.

OR 2) Explain the academic discipline of Human Geography using the five themes. How is this discipline different from the study of physical geography? In your opinion, what is the benefit of studying Human Geography?

OR 3) The demographic transition graph describes the changes in birthrates and death rates that a country experiences over time. Describe the changes that the United States has gone through by using the demographic transition diagram.

STEP FOUR: First, go to the following website and read the news story you will find there:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/24/world/americas/24mexico.html

Then, in a short yet brilliant essay, summarize that story by relating it to our studies of immigration in class. Try to use terms from the text and from our class discussions.

This is a very interesting argument between both sides. Pro- globalization thinks that it will help with better technology, new ideas, and more money. They also think that the money will trickle down to the poor, so the poor will actually get money. Also, that the poor countries will catch up to the rich ones. On the other hand people against globalization think that it will only benefit the rich ones and that they consume all the resources and money. I think they middle would be that they have globalization and the poor countries get more money than the rich ones. The rich ones already have money so to make everyone happy the poor countries would get the money. Also, the rich countries can have the ideas and some profits, but they do not need anymore because they are rich. Since globalization is everywhere than everyone should at least get some profit from it. The rich ones will take it for granted to their ability and the poor countries will use it for their best. The world is everyone’s, so everyone should have part of the resources and profits of technology and globalization.

The News Article Essay
This story is about how a high percentage of Mexicans want to come and live in the US. The Mexicans that are leaving their home country and moving to the US are called emigrants. Mexicans entering the US are called immigrants. They are leaving because of push and pull factors. Push factors are factors that make someone want to leave their country. Pull factors are factors that bring someone into living in their country. Mexicans want to leave their country because of their push factors. Mexico does not have the better health program, job opportunity or freedom. The pull factors for going into the US are that they have all the things that the Mexicans want to have. Many Mexicans want to come to the US so badly that they come over illegally. More than half of the percentages from the survey say that they have come over illegally. There is also a higher percentage that more people are happy to be here than are unhappy being in the US.

Title: Immigration Officials Consider More Fee Increases
Site: Los Angeles Times

- This article is about the increase of cost for the immigrants. They are afraid of not being able to migrate because they cannot pay the fee. "The immigration agency, which is a self-supporting, faces an 118 million dollar shortfall." Immigrants do not want to lose their rights to migrate. The agencies have to get money from Congress to not lose money and shortfall. Immigrants want to migrate, but they cannot do that without legalization, that cannot happen without money to confirm them into their new country. The immigrants are upset and angry because this is their new chance for a new and better lifestyle.

- Fertility Rate is the rate of how many children are being born in a specific country. This article talks about how Taiwan's fertility rate is the lowest in the world. A survey shows that Taiwan has an "average of one child per women." That means that if there is a very low rate of babies then there would be a very low rate of women too. "According to the data sheet Taiwan registered only eight-births per 1,000 population, the lowest level in the world. Taiwan's population as of mid- 2009 was 23.1 million." It also looks like that the population will decrease over the years.

- Many countries have increasing population over the years. Also, countries can have a decreasing population too. Australia has a larger population than India. Japan's population is going to decrease. This is because there is to many people and they will not hav enough resources for all of them. Saudi Arabia is going to increase by 74 percent. As you can tell some countries are increasing and or decreasing. Australia is supposed to have an increasing population. If there population goes up then there pollution will go up, because of this they will not want their population to go up.

Today's Class

Today in class we talked about migration patterns from country to country, what causes migration, and the effects of it. This lesson as always interested me and made me want to listen and pay attention. Many people from developing countries migrate to countries that are developed such as the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, etc. They migrate because of push and pull factors. Push factors are factors that push the migrants to leave the country because of bad things that are happening there. Pull factors are factors that pull migrants into a developed country because of better jobs, economic opportunity, or health care. Some push factors are war, bad health care, disease, torture, etc. Many migrants migrate to a bigger and better developed country.
They migrate from there homeland because it does not give them the resources to live a happy and healthy life. A refugee is a person who leaves their homeland because of discrimination, war, race, etc. "Net Migration Rate is the statistic that states whether more people are entering or leaving the country." The net migration rate for the US is that more people are entering than leaving because we are a developed country with money, resources, and technology. Canada's migration rate I believe would be more people are entering than leaving to because they are also a developed country and have the same tools as we do, they also get migrants first then some of them come to the US. For Mexico, I think more people are leaving because I do not think that Mexico is a developed country yet. All the people there cross the border for better opportunities in the US for them and their families. My ancestors are from Sicily, Italy. They came over to Ellis Island, stayed in New York and had my grandparents, then they came to Maryland, had their kids, and then came me.

Migration Patterns

○ There are 190 million people that live somewhere other than their birth country. Migrants are people who leave their country to live somewhere else.

○ Money drives people to go other places for bigger and better things, causing Globalization.

○ The 190 million people, 1/3 of them ended up in either Japan, Germany, the US, France, Canada, Italy, or the United Kingdom.

○ People who migrate go to places that are developed and have jobs to offer them and money.

○ Migrants also leave because of war, persecution, famine, and environmental destruction.

○ Officials believe that an estimate that some 35 million people should be considered refugees, more than half of these are in Africa and western Asia.

○ Refugee- a person who flees their country because of a well founded fear of persecution, race, ethnicity, religion, ideology, or political affiliation.

○ Push factors make people leave because of unemployment, civil strife, environmental degradation.

○ Pull factors are what brings people to their country like better economic opportunity or health services, attract migrants to a certain location.

○ Two different types of migration
§ Immigrant- to come into a different place
§ Emigrant- to leave your country and go to another.
§ Net migration rate- a statistic that depicts whether more people are entering or leaving a country.

○ More people are leaving Mexico than coming in, -2.65

The Demographic Transition

"The Demographic Transition is a model of a four stage conceptualization that tracks changes in birthrates and death rates through time as a population urbanizes." This shows what the population is because of all the new technology in the World. It also shows what the population will be like in some years. All the huge countries will millions of people are urban and have technology. These models show the birthrates, death rates, natural increase, etc. This transition is also used to see what the population will be like because of now. There are many stages to this demographic transition, stage 1,2,3, and 4. "Stage 1 is the birthrates, death rates and the natural increase of population." "Stage 2 is death rates that decrease while the birthrates increase, this makes higher RNI." "Stage 3 is is when the people realize the impact on the population because of the industry." "Finally, stage 4 is when there is very low birth and death rates causing there to be a RNI. All the larger and richer countries are in stage 4." I believe that industry and technology can effect population. I think that because if there is bigger and better technology than people will not want to share, making them only care for themselves, this will lead to not children. With less natural increase of people there is also a decreasing population because old people are dying. More and more people die because of health problems because there are so many fast food restaurants and fattening foods. Also, people work dangerous jobs. All these things play a role in either the increase or decrease of population.

Today's Class 9/18/09

Today's class was about deveolping and already deveolped countries. We figured out why people in Africa have millions of young kids than US, and why women have kids at such a young age. We said that people in the US can support themselves and do not have to put the kids to work to help the family get food or do household jobs. In Africa, the families cannot support themselves, so they have to have kids at young ages just to get food, keep up the household, etc. They use the kids to do work and try to get money for the family. Also, that there are many old people and more young people, showing that the natural increase will increase beacuse the old people will die and the young people will have the kids. We also talked about the death rate, the birth rate, and the people that leave the country. The birth and death rate will equal eachother out.

Venezuela's Population Pyramid

I compared Venezuelas population pryramid to the US's population pyramid. The deveolped country is the US and the deveolping country is Venezuela. For the US the fertility rate is ok, its about 10 million. The percent of young people from 35 and younger is around 11 million people. For the older people, 40 and older, it starts from 11 million, and then goes down to 0. So, you can see that the population is decreasing when you start to go up the chart to the older people. I think the natural increase is slow because the most people are from 45 to 50. People that age do not have kids. There is a low amount of young people and maybe some of them do not even want to have kids, making the population decrease. Now to Venezuela, its fertility rate is very hih because there are about 1.3 million young people. That means at young ages people are having babies. The percentage of young people are around 11 million people. That is good for the country because its still deveolping and they have people to do jobs. The percentage of old people are similar to the US's old people population. Venezuela's old population is from .9 million to 0. The population is decreasing like the US. Also, unlike the US the natural increase is faster than America. There are many young people and children, showing that many young couples want children so they can help they family. By doing that it is increasing the population.

In the population pyramid for Venezuela in the year of 2009 shows that there are more young men than young women. As the graph goes on it shows that there are more older women than older men. The most women in Venezuela are actually children, these children are the ages of ten.So, the highest percentage of girls in Venezuela are 10 years old. There are about 1.3 million girls that are 10 years old in Venezuela. When we go over to the men, its the same thing, there are more young people than old people. Just like the women, the highest percentage of men are actually boys at the age of 10. When you get to the top of the chart, you will see that it percentages are decreasing by alot. The smallest percentages are at the ages of 85 and above. In America women have a higher percentage of life expectancy. This is because women go to the doctor more and they don't have as dangerous jobs as men do, keeping them safer. Unlike the US, Venezuela has a higher percent of men to life longer. Men can live up to 100, but it is a very small percent. All this information is from the year of 2009.

I also looked at a population graph from twenty years from now. In the year of 2029, the graphs are very very similar. From the boys to girls, the estimates are almost identical. For the men ages from 20 to 30 have the same amount of people. For the women from ages of 0 to 10 have about the same amount of people too. The women always have a little more people than the men, but the men have a longer life expectancy. Its very interesting to see that every graph I've seen the older population always decreases and there is always alot more young people.

Today's Class 9/16/09

Today's class was a real wake up call about how much technology has taken over society. We watched a video about percentages of how many people are on myspace, games, emails, facebook, etc. There were very high percentages and that shocked me. Technology has come a very long way and has now spread across the World. We also talked about how young children are playing video games on the computer for hours and don't get up. It's amazing to me how back when my dad was a kid, he would tell me stories how kids would play games all day because they had nothing else to do. Now, kids are entertained by games on the computer, facebook, and myspace. This can also cause many children to gain weight and develop unhealthy habits because they do not get enough exercise. I was also surprised that soon the US will not be the number one country that speaks English. China, will soon be the number one English speaking country. I think this because the US are getting lots of immigrants and bringing their culture and language with them, causing less and less English language. China has a high percentage of English because they are learning English, and they have alot more people than the US. Today, I learned many new shocking percents and facts about the US, that I didn't think was that big of a deal. Now, the things that people thought were going to be nothing, has now made billions of dollars and has spread across the World.

Learning Objectives:
○ To understand the components of the population pyramid.
○ To understand that the statistics represented in a population pyramid can help human geographers determine what will happen to a country's population.
○ Students should be able to gather and analyze population pyramids to determine a nation's prosperity and be able to determine what is happening to a particular country's population.

Population Pyramids:
§ Graphically represent the age and gender distribution of certain population.
§ Can be represented by region or by country.
§ Help human geographers determine what is happening to individual populations across the globe.
□ Nigeria has many more small children than older people.
□ Germany has more older people than children
□ The United States has an equal amount of young and old people.
□ Nigeria has more young people because at young ages girls have babies.

Elements of Population Pyramid:
Ø Age- population pyramids visually present the population of a particular country broken down by age.
Ø Gender- population pyramids are split. One side presents the number of males and females. Women on the left and men on the right.
Ø Young and Old Populations- Percentage of population under 15: global average is 30 percent, low is 17 percent (Europe); high of 42 percent (Africa); high number indicates great potential for future growth; Percentage of population over age 65: identifies need health care and other social services
Ø Life Expectancy: average number of years a person is expected to live; affected by many factors such ad sickness/illness, bone problems, AIDS, Flu

Today's Class 9/15/09

In today's class we talked about population in countries and population pyramids. I learned that the life expectancy for woman is higher than men. It's because men deveolp more bad health problems such as diabeates, heart disease, smoking, etc. Men also have dangerous jobs. When we studied the graphs, we found out that in Nigeria are are a lot more young people than old people. In Nigeria its part of thier culture to have kids at young ages to help support the family and work in the fields. In Germany, there are more old people than young people. Without young people there will not be any jobs, new technologies, etc. When all the young people die, there will be no people left, and Germany will not be a living country anymore. The United States has an equal amount of men, women, and children. Its interesting how different countries have different populations and life expectancy because of thier culture, environment, and where they live. We also took a quiz and I thought I did pretty good on it. So far, all the things we have learned I have grasped onto and remembered. I like this class and its a fun class to be in.

Today's Class

In today's class I learned alot. So far, globalization has been a fun and exciting subject to learn about. I learned that globalization effects everyone around the World. It also helps the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. The US is using people from other countries to make their products, and then pay them only a couple cents. If you think about it the US is degrading other countries with thier own products so they can get all the money. I feel bad for the workers becuase they work had in sweatshops all day in bad conditions to make products that sell for thirty to fifty dollars and they do not even get paid one dollar for a hard days work.
I also learned that globalization from the US to other countries is on its way to killing people. There are millions of McDonald's in the US, and now there are millions across the world. These fast food places are breaking the traditions of people eating together as a family. With these fast food places more and more people are eating there becuase thier lives are so busy and they start developing health problems. Globalization is a good and a bad thing. Its a good thing because it spreads businesses around the World and its a bad thing because it only helps the rich and the workers get very little pay. So, in class we pretty much talked about the pros and cons of globalization.
